..:: Exultant ::.. On the rim of the Perseus arm in our own galaxy, there is a small binary system comprising of 3 planets. One of which lies in the heart of the habitable zone. This piece depicts the home planet of a possible advanced civilization on the other side of the galaxy.
Exultant is made entirely in Adobe Photoshop CS5 and 6, and spans 4 months of work. I started with the planet. I had a good idea of how I wanted to place the planet in the scene, so the lighting wa s spot on to begin with. The city lights took shape and the textures where applied to the planet. Layer upon layer of clouds where next. Atmospherics and haze after that.
The scene evolved: I added some rings to the planet. First a 2D plane, then lighting and shadows. Then some asteroids. In the mean time, 2 stars where born. I opted for a binary system, since 80% of the stars in the Milky Way are joined binary star systems.
A couple of 'hero' asteroids joined the scene. Lots of high res textures ensured a realistic, yet sci-fi look to them. It all began to take shape with the lighting of the asteroid field (planet ring). Finally some smaller effects, like the magnetic interference between the competing stars and the 'northern' lights on the face of the planet. The starfield was made seperately and joined it in the final leg of the scene.
Getting some contrast in there and applying some nice 'Surreal Exposure' filters to the final scene made it into a piece that's undoubtedly one of my favorites to date.
