..:: Star Speckled Skies ::..
My first attempt at astro landscapes! I'm currently training my skills at these night shots for the coming holiday. The most serious issue is the amount of storage space I would need for more of these. The 16GB SD card was full after this shoot.
Composite shot with the 550D at 10mm with the 550D.
Foreground: f/5.6, 50s, ISO1600
Sky: f/8, 1.6s, ISO1600.
Now some technical stuff.
I shot 400 light frames, 50 dark frames and 30 bias frames for this one. I don't quite get the software I used for this: DeepSkyStacker. Stuff I did learn from this first attempt:
-Make sure that your all of your frames are converted from RAW equally. If there's a lens distortion correction on the light frames, apply it on the dark and bias frames as well.
-More light next time! I used a shutterspeed of 1.6 seconds for the stars and a shutterspeed of 50 seconds for the foreground. 2 minutes for the foreground at a lesser ISO would have been better and 30 seconds, wide open to capture the stars would have been great.
-Noise is still a major issue! A lens that's nice and sharp at f/2.8 should be great for these.
